If you’re searching around for information on kegerators, the odds are you’ve seen one at a party and now you have to have one for yourself. But there are a lot of people out there who think there’s no way they could afford one.
Building your own kegerator can not only give you a great party piece, but you can save a load of money compared to the pre-made ones. You don’t have to be a DIY wizard and you don’t have to spend every penny you’ve made to do it. In fact, if you or someone you know has an old fridge hanging out in the garage that they’re looking to get rid of, you might have a potential kegerator project. And since they’re so popular at parties, it’s a sure bet that a couple friends would be happy to help out.

The first thing you are going to need is a refrigerator. Even the bottom-of-the-line models can run $400 or more and they come with things like storage shelves, crispers and humidity control that you aren’t going to need anyways.
Your best bet is to find someone with an old fridge they want to get rid of. You might be able to get one for free, but at the most you will be spending substantially less than if you buy something from a showroom.
The next step in making a kegerator is to buy a kegerator conversion kit from a retailer. You can typically get them for very cheap, no more than $100, and they will come with everything you need to install the kit in a fridge. Most importantly, they should come with instructions on how to put everything together and what to do to the fridge.
You’re going to be running hose and installing a tap so you will need the proper tools for the job. Since a kegerator requires gauges and CO2 canisters, it isn’t something that most people can build from scratch.
After installing the kit in the fridge, the rest of the process should be pretty simple. Most fridges will hold a standard-size keg and the process of attaching it should be straight forward. Most kegerator kits come with complete instructions on the process from installing the kit to hooking up a keg.
Building the kegerator might take a little money and patience, but afterwards you have something really great for parties that you can customize however you like. The great thing about building your own keg is that you can customize it however you want. With your own, you can paint it team colors for a Super Bowl party or use a stainless steel fridge for something classic.
If the fridge can hold magnets you could even put up pictures of everyone from the last party and really give people something to talk about and enjoy. You can also get custom tap handles and serving glasses for your kegerator. Buying a kegerator might be easier, but nothing really makes a party as much fun as a great custom kegerator you built yourself.
